After many years of generalized joint & back pain... and several doctors telling me the only solution was prescription pain management, I decided to make a drastic change in my approach to health. A life sentence of liver-destroying, addictive pain meds at the age of 24 was something I wasn't willing to give into. I found a new doctor, one who practices holistic, homeopathic medicine. I changed my diet by eating whole foods and removing processed nutrient-deficient "foods." And most importantly, I joined CrossFit! I've been working hard and loving (almost) every minute of CrossFit. After four months of training, I'm stronger, leaner and above all, PAIN FREE! Joining CrossFit is the best decision I've ever made. Ever. Thanks so much for your help, Steven! I'd be lost without you..

I have been ice skating as long as I can remember (Dad used to flood the yard and make a rink) and I trained competitively for figure skating beginning at age 13, gave it up in college, taught for a long time on and off and then resumed training at age 40. I gave it up due to a hip injury in 2005 and then did not pick it back up due to graduate school responsibilities. Thanks to a friend, I began skating for fun again in March 2009. This same friend introduced me to CrossFit and I began in mid June 2009. I remember skating after my first of five training sessions, I was so tired! I did not have a chance to skate again until July 26th. I could not believe the difference in my ability to skate, even recreationally!!! I was far stronger, more agile, had much better posture, had better aerobic capacity, was able to perform a one foot spin with much better results (tighter and faster) and just felt much more confident in my physical ability. That, of course, did wonders for my self esteem as well! This week I have been on vacation in Northern Michigan and have been making modifications to the WOD, using whatever is available and modifying as needed, it has been great. Part of my WOD has been to go sailing on a Sun Fish, something I have been doing almost every summer since age 8. There were a couple of days that the high wind speed and high surf made for short (wicked good) trips with a crew, and other days, like today, when I sailed single-handedly for two hours. Again I noticed a greater ability to manage the hauling around of the boat equipment, the hull itself and more importantly, the act of sailing. From just holding the main sheet and the tiller, to hiking out to avoid capsizing, and wanting to push myself a little harder to rounding the buoy more efficiently. I can't wait to feel the difference in snow skiing, my third lifetime sport!!!!! These two sports, that I have enjoyed from childhood to age 52, have been significantly enhanced by CrossFit. What more can I say than Thanks John!, Thanks Steve and Ryan! and thanks to the entire CrossFit 9 crew for welcoming me into this unique experience.

I was introduced to CrossFit about 6 months ago by some very enthusiastic friends of mine, soon after I found CrossFit 9 and started to work out with Steve, Ryan, and the rest of the gang. At the time I had not been in a gym for about 8 years and had very little physical activity in my life. It seemed like I had every excuse not to work out, but mostly my schedule did not allow me to spend hours in the gym. Since our CrossFit workouts are short (usually less than an hour including warm-up) time was no longer an issue for me. The only goal I really had when I started was just basic physical fitness, but soon I found my short daily investment was transforming my physical and mental state. I also noticed that some of my personal ailments either disappeared or became less intense, joint pain, fatigue, back pain, and even migraine headaches are now almost nonexistent and no longer require medication. The trainers at CrossFit 9 are knowledgeable & professional, and the members are all courteous. To me it feels less like a gym, and more like a team functioning to help everyone reach their goals. CrossFit has helped me to build strength, endurance, and balance. The investment paid off when just after 3 months I was able to complete a 15k run, and now with almost 6 months of CrossFit I am 35 pounds lighter then when I started. I can say with confidence that with the help of Steve, Ryan, and the members of CrossFit 9, I will continue to reach my goals of physical fitness.
